U.S. scholars’ group votes in favor of academic boycott of Israel

GermanboycottYet another indication of the absolute corruption, left-wing extremism, and outright anti-Semitism of American academia today. Hitler is looking up at you all with a smile. “US scholars’ group votes in favor of academic boycott of Israel,” from the Jerusalem Post, December 16:

NEW YORK – The 5,000-member American Studies Association (ASA), which describes itself as “the nation’s oldest and largest association devoted to the interdisciplinary study of American culture and history,” announced on Monday that it had endorsed and would participate in a boycott of Israeli universities and academic institutions.

It is the second educational group in the US to adopt the boycott. The Association for Asian American Studies did so in April. Another academic group, the American Association of University Professors, recently reiterated its opposition.

In all, 1,252 members of the ASA participated in the vote on whether or not to endorse the boycott. Approximately 66 percent voted yes, 30% voted no and 3% abstained. The voting began on December 4 and ended on Sunday.

The membership-wide canvass was unprecedented. It was undertaken in part at the behest of boycott opponents who said at the ASA’s annual conference last month in Washington that the matter was too sensitive to leave to the group’s 20-member national council, which had unanimously endorsed a boycott.

“The National Council engaged and addressed questions and concerns of the membership throughout the process,” the ASA statement said.

“During the open discussion at the recent convention, members asked us to draft a resolution that was relevant to the ASA in particular and so the Council’s final resolution acknowledged that the US plays a significant role in enabling the Israeli occupation of Palestine.”

The final resolution, which applies to the ASA as an organization, is not binding on its members. It also targets institutions, not individuals.

In Monday’s announcement, the ASA said it would still invite Israeli and Palestinian academics to its 2014 national meeting in Los Angeles.

Jewish groups in the US reacted strongly and immediately to the announcement….

Ronald S. Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, had similar words for the ASA, saying that it was actions like this that caused “many Americans [to] dismiss the academy as deeply biased and disconnected with reality….”

Leader of West-backed Free Syrian Army defects to al-Qaeda group, calls FSA “apostates”

SaddamAlJamalThis is one of the “moderate” leaders whom John Kerry and others were confidently telling us quite recently would soon win out in Syria. “Syrian fighter defects to Qaeda-linked group,” by Basma Atassi for Al Jazeera, December 16:

In a farmhouse in eastern Syria, a group of men sat around a teapot observing it jiggle over a pile of burning paper bills. Lacking fuel, a charming rebel leader playfully told his comrades that he would make them tea by lighting Syrian pounds under the pot, a statement that soon turned into a dare. Minutes later, the 35-year-old man proudly poured black tea for his guests in small glass cups.

Saddam al-Jamal’s friends narrate this anecdote, which they say took place a few months ago, to illustrate their commander’s humour and free spirit. Jamal headed the Allahu Akbar Brigade, which was once one of the most effective groups fighting against President Bashar al-Assad’s forces in the province of Deir Ezzor.

Its fighters operate under the loose umbrella of the Western-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA). Jamal was not only the leader of a battalion but also a top FSA commander for the whole of Syria’s eastern region.

In November, however, he announced his “repentance” for his membership in the battalion and the FSA, dubbing them “apostates”.

Wearing a brown leather jacket and a black-and-white scarf wrapped around his head, Jamal was filmed seated in front of al-Qaeda’s black flag. He addressed his fighters, urging them to also abandon the FSA. The FSA calls for “killing of our IsIamist brethrens and prevents the rule of Allah from being established on Earth”, he said in the video, released by the al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Jamal echoed claims that the ISIL and other Islamist fighter groups have been reiterating in recent months: that the “moderate” FSA is being groomed by the West and its Arab allies to point their weapons towards “extremist” groups upon the collapse of Assad’s regime.

Breitbart poll: 70% do not trust the media to inform about Obamacare

My question is, who are the 30% who still trusts the mainstream media? On what planet do they live on?

“Breitbart poll: 70% do not trust the media to inform about Obamacare,” Breitbart, December 19, 2013:

NewspaperPileCCA Breitbart News/Judicial Watch poll reveals the extent to which the public has lost trust in the media as an information outlet. The survey finds that 7 out of 10 adults do not trust the media to accurately inform them about the new healthcare law and five out of ten say so strongly.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement. “I trust the media to accurately inform me about the new healthcare law.”

27% TOTAL AGREE

9% STRONGLY AGREE

18% SOMEWHAT AGREE

70% TOTAL DISAGREE

18% SOMEWHAT DISAGREE

52% STRONGLY DISAGREE

2% DO NOT KNOW

The distrust goes beyond partisan differences. Although Republicans are more likely to distrust the media, Independents and Democrats are notably skeptical as well.

Op-Ed: How Israel Might Look Next December if Kerry Succeeds

IsraelNationalNews (Dec 13) — Once again, Israel’s Left tells us that Israel cannot survive if we refuse to surrender land. They say that Israel and ‘Palestine’ can live ‘side-by-side in peace and security’.

They are wrong.

Currently, Arabs control 99.75 per cent of land in the Middle East. Israel controls 2.5 tenths of one per cent of the Middle East.  Israel’s Left, the EU and the US believe that that is too much land for Jews.

There can be no peace, in their opinon, if Jews control that much land.

Therefore, sometime in 2014, Israel must give to the Arab both Judea-Samaria and parts of Jerusalem. That way, Arabs will control 99.87 per cent of the Middle East.

The West is serious about this. So is Israel’s Left. They both want Israel to sign a diplomatic ‘letter of intent’ to allow ‘peace’ to unfold in ‘stages’; at least, that’s the most likely scenario for current peace talks.

It’s a clever approach. It allows the West and Israel’s Left to declare that a deal has been done.

It won’t matter that all that’s been done is an agreement to agree. What will matter is, the West and Israel’s Left will have a piece of paper they can wave and say, ‘we have peace’.

Haven’t we been there, done that?

The PA—our so-called peace partner—will also wave paper in the air. But it won’t be a peace agreement. It will be their new map–which shows ‘Palestine’ in place of Israel.

This moment, however, will be a beginning, not an end. For Arabs, the ‘end’ will come only when Israel has been destroyed and all Arab “refugees” return to Israel.

Egypt orders deposed President Morsi to trial for conspiring with Hamas, Hezbollah

The Jerusalem Post (Dec 18) — Egypt’s public prosecutor ordered former President Mohamed Morsi and 35 other Islamists to stand trial on charges including conspiring with foreign groups to commit terrorist acts in Egypt and divulging military secrets to a foreign state.

The charges leveled against Morsi and other top Muslim Brotherhood members on Wednesday could result in their execution.

Morsi is already standing trial for inciting violence during protests outside the presidential palace a year ago when he was still in office. He was deposed in July by the army following mass protests against his rule.

In a statement, the prosecutor said the Brotherhood had committed acts of violence and terrorism in Egypt and prepared a “terrorist plan” that included an alliance with the Palestinian group Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah. There was no immediate comment from Hamas or Hezbollah.

The charge sheet called it “the biggest case of conspiracy in the history of Egypt”. It accused the Brotherhood of carrying out attacks on security forces in North Sinai after he was deposed on July 3.

It said the Brotherhood had hatched a plan dating back to 2005 that would send “elements” to the Gaza Strip for military training by Hezbollah and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

“The greatest pianist in the world” is now Israeli

225px-Evgeny_Kissin_TA_2011Evgeny Kissin, generally regarded as one of the world’s greatest living pianists, has taken Israeli citizenship.  Kissin, who was born in Russia, said “Israel is the only state on our planet which I want to represent with my art and all my public activities, no matter where I live.”

Mideast Dispatch (Dec 5) –While some other leading artists are calling for a boycott of Israel, I can now reveal that Evgeny Kissin, generally regarded as one of the world’s greatest living pianists, will on Saturday take Israeli citizenship.

Unlike some Israeli musicians, Evgeny Kissin, who was born in Russia and has in recent years resided in London and Paris, is fiercely proud of being Jewish and of the Jewish state.

“I am a Jew, Israel is a Jewish state – and since long ago I have felt that Israel, although I do not live there, is the only state in the world with which I can fully identify myself, whose case, problems, tragedies and very destiny I perceive to be mine.

“If I, as a human being and artist represent anything in the world, it is my Jewish people, and therefore Israel is the only state on our planet which I want to represent with my art and all my public activities, no matter where I live.

“When Israel’s enemies try to disrupt concerts of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra or the Jerusalem Quartet, I want them to come and make troubles at my concerts, too: because Israel’s case is my case, Israel’s enemies are my enemies, and I do not want to be spared of the troubles which Israeli musicians encounter when they represent the Jewish State beyond its borders.

“I have always deeply despised chauvinism and have never regarded my people to be superior to other peoples; I feel truly blessed that my profession is probably the most international one in the world, that I play music created by great composers of different countries, that I travel all over the world and share my beloved music with people of different countries and nationalities – but I want all the people who appreciate my art to know that I am a Jew, that I belong to the People of Israel. That’s why now I feel a natural desire to travel around the world with an Israeli passport.”

What do the Saudis have on the US?: Buck Sexton reveals the alarming answer

The Blaze (Dec 16) — “What do the Saudis have on us?” Glenn Beck asked TheBlaze’s national security adviser Buck Sexton on Monday.

As Beck sees it, there are too many instances where the Saudis have received unwarranted preferential treatment in the wake of terrorist attacks, among other things, for there not to be another layer to the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia.

As Sexton sees it, the Gulf nation has a number of factors working to its advantage. Among them, Sexton said the Saudis position themselves as “the least bad alternative,” though “most people would probably put that secondary to ‘a whole lot of oil.’”

In many cases we have no choice but to work with them, Sexton added, “and so we were willing to turn a blind eye to certain stuff.”

The former CIA officer added that it is doubly difficult to discover the truth on such matters because of how redacted the relevant documents are. They are purposefully presented that way, he said, because in many cases “the government is trying to avoid embarrassment.”

They want to keep private the fact that “nobody was minding the store,” he said.

“You hope that the government would be doing it because of specific sources and methods, things that they need to (protect),” he added. “The much more likely one is real embarrassment – missing things that … people should’ve possibly gone to jail for, if not lost their jobs for.”

Popular fact checking website’s ‘lie of the year’ goes to Obama

The Blaze (Dec 12) — The popular factchecking website PolitiFact announced its “Lie of the Year” on CNN Thursday. The distinction went to President Barack Obama’s oft-repeated claim during the health care policy debate that “if you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.”

Angie Drobnic Holan, editor of PolitiFact, said on CNN that her colleagues at PolitiFact made their choice based on Obama’s “lie” having “the most impact” on the debate.

Millions of Americans have actually lost their existing health insurance policies after the new health care law, also known as “Obamacare,” was implemented.

“Boiling down the complicated health care law to a soundbite proved treacherous, even for its promoter-in-chief,” reads a post on PolitiFact. “Obama and his team made matters worse, suggesting they had been misunderstood all along. The stunning political uproar led to this: a rare presidential apology.”

In 2009, PolitiFact rated the claim as “half true.”

Indonesian jihadists dreaming of a bloody Christmas

Christians-Executed-in-Indonesia-by-MuslimsReuters (Dec 12) — Indonesia’s president has ordered police to step up security around churches over the Christmas holidays following reports of possible attacks.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono did not name the groups, but it was a clear reference to Islamic extremists. Though major terror groups have largely been crushed following a series of deadly attacks in the early 2000s, small Muslim extremist cells still operate.

I have received a report from the chief of police of the existence of the elements who plan to disrupt security and order in certain places,” the presidential palace quoted Yudhoyono as saying on Thursday before flying to Japan for a regional summit.

The warning comes amid growing concerns of a rise in religious intolerance in the world’s largest Muslim population, with the government criticised for not doing enough to protect religious minorities, including Christians, from hardline Islamic groups.

We will deploy two thirds of our personnel and safety apparatus at churches and other places of worship, shopping centres, tourist and entertainment spots that are frequented by the public (over the Christmas and New Year holidays),” national police chief General Sutarman said.

Muslims in Europe: 75% think only one interpretation of Qur’an possible; 65% think Islamic supersedes secular law; 45% think Jews cannot be trusted

Picture1

The Washington Post (Dec 13) — One narrative about Muslim immigrants in Europe is that only a relatively small proportion holds views that are sometimes labeled as “fundamentalist.” Ruud Koopmans from the Wissenschaftszentrum in Berlin argues that this perspective is incorrect. He conducted a telephone survey of 9,000 respondents in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Austria, and Sweden and interviewed both Turkish and Moroccan immigrants as well as a comparison group of Christians.

His first finding is that majorities of Muslim immigrants believe that there is only one interpretation of the Koran possible to which every Muslim should stick (75 percent), and that religious rules are more important than the laws of the country in which they live (65 percent). Moreover, these views are as widespread among younger Muslims as among older generations.

He then looks at hostility toward out-groups. Fifty-eight percent do not want homosexual friends, 45 percent think that Jews cannot be trusted, and 54 percent believe that the West is out to destroy Muslim culture. Among Christians, 23 percent believe that Muslims are out to destroy Western culture. Koopmans says these results hold when you control for the varying socio-economic characteristics of these groups (although the analyses are not presented)….

This study is bound to attract ample media attention (it already has) and will be seen as a verification for political parties with extreme views, such as Geert Wilders’s PVV in the Netherlands. This is not an issue per se, facts are facts, however uncomfortable they may be, and from what I can tell, this is a professional survey (technical report here) done by a reputable academic scholar. Indeed, the survey was conducted in 2008, and the researchers appear to have waited until now to publicize these findings. Nevertheless, I wished that the publication of a sensitive survey like this would be partnered with a bit more information. For example, I could not even track down country-specific marginals for the main survey questions and key analyses in the article come without tables or graphs.

Still, the finding that 54 percent of Muslims in these six Western European countries believe that the West is out to destroy Muslim culture can hardly be ignored. A Dutch newspaper, Trouw, cites Arabist Jan Jaap de Ruiter who argues that Muslims have a tendency to give “socially desirable” answers to survey questions. Even if this is true, I’d still be very concerned that the apparent socially desirable answer is that Jews should not be trusted and that the West is out to get Muslims. An added concern is the absence of generational differences in the survey responses; suggesting that this is not an issue that is likely to go away any time soon.

10,000-year-old house uncovered outside Jerusalem

With range of dramatic finds in excavations ahead of highway expansion, archaeologists trace 10 millennia of human development.

Excavation at Eshtaol along Route 38.

The Times of Israel — A remarkable archaeological find in the Judean lowlands southwest of Jerusalem includes a six-millennia-old cultic temple and a 10,000-year-old house.

The ancient sites were located in routine archaeological digs conducted ahead of a planned expansion of Route 38, the main access road to Beit Shemesh. The building is the oldest ever found in the area, and constitutes remarkable “evidence of man’s transition to permanent dwellings,” researchers said Monday.

Labeling it “a fascinating glimpse into thousands of years of human development,” the Israel Antiquities Authority, together with the Netivei Israel Company that is carrying out the highway expansion, invited the public to visit the excavation site in Eshtaol on Wednesday, November 27.

“Settlement remains were unearthed at the site, the earliest of which dates to the beginning of the eighth millennium BCE and latest to the end of the fourth millennium BCE,” the authority said in a statement Monday.

“We uncovered a multitude of unique finds during the excavation,” said Amir Golani, one of the excavators for the Antiquities Authority. “The large excavation affords us a broad picture of the progression and development of the society in the settlement throughout the ages. Thus we can clearly see that in the Early Bronze Age, 5,000 years ago, a rural society made the transition to an urban society. We can see distinctly a settlement that gradually became planned, which included [streets] and buildings that were extremely impressive from the standpoint of their size and the manner of their construction. We can clearly trace the urban planning and see the guiding hand of the settlement’s leadership that chose to regulate the construction in the crowded regions in the center of the settlement and allowed less planning along its periphery.”

…But the building wasn’t the only find at the site. A handful of buildings from the end of the Chalcolithic period, some 6,000 years ago, was found nearby. At the site, excavators found a six-sided stone column standing some 1.3 meters (51 inches) high and weighing several hundred kilos.

“The standing stone was smoothed and worked on all six of its sides,” the archaeologists said, explaining that its broad face was oriented eastward and concluding that the find ”alludes to the presence of a cultic temple at the site.”

White House: Iranian ballistic missile test not a deal killer

Mideast Iran Space MonkeyWhat would be a deal killer? A nuclear missile landing in downtown Tel Aviv? Or is that the point of the agreement in the first place, at least as far as the Iranians are concerned? “White House: Iranian Ballistic Missile Test Not a Deal Killer,” by Adam Kredo for the Washington Free Beacon, December 11:

The White House says that an Iranian ballistic missile test would not invalidate a recently signed nuclear accord meant to temporarily halt some of Iran’s most controversial nuclear work.

The White House clarified its stance just days before Iran is scheduled to launch another ballistic missile some 75 miles into the atmosphere.

The statement contradicts recent remarks indicating that such a test would in fact violate and nullify the weeks-old agreement, which provides Iran with some $7 billion in relief from economic sanctions in exchange for a partial six-month freeze of its uranium enrichment program.

A White House National Security Council (NSC) spokeswoman told PolitiFact on Friday that an Iranian missiles test in the next six months would in fact “be in violation of the agreement” and that “the agreement would cease to exist.”

Asked on Wednesday morning to clarify that statement in light of Iran’s intent to launch a rocket next week, a White House official said that PolitiFact got it wrong.

“That statement on ballistic missiles is incorrect,” the official told theWashington Free Beacon via email. “We have reached out to PolitiFact to correct.”…

Rise in honor killings among Palestinians; Palestinian official blames Israel

HonorkillingJihadWatch (Dec 12) — The “Palestinians,” as you can see from the story below, are in complete denial about why these killings happen. Muslims commit 91 percent of honor killings worldwide. A manual of Islamic law certified as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy by Al-Azhar University, the most respected authority in Sunni Islam, says that “retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right.” However, “not subject to retaliation” is “a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring’s offspring.” (‘Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2).

In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law. The Palestinian Authority gives pardons or suspended sentences for honor murders. Iraqi women have asked for tougher sentences for Islamic honor murderers, who get off lightly now. Syria in 2009 scrapped a law limiting the length of sentences for honor killings, but “the new law says a man can still benefit from extenuating circumstances in crimes of passion or honour ‘provided he serves a prison term of no less than two years in the case of killing.'” And in 2003 the Jordanian Parliament voted down on Islamic grounds a provision designed to stiffen penalties for honor killings. Al-Jazeera reported that “Islamists and conservatives said the laws violated religious traditions and would destroy families and values.”

In light of all this, until authorities get the courage to tell the truth about honor killing, there will be many more such murders.

“Palestinians see worrisome trend in ‘honour’ killings rise,” by Noah Browning for Reuters, December 11:

AQQABA, West Bank, Dec 11 (Reuters) – A silvery green olive grove set in the red soil of a Palestinian village is a crime scene – testament to a practice so sensitive that it is spoken of only in whispers.

One night in late November, Rasha Abu Ara, a 32-year-old mother of five, was beaten to death and strung from a gnarled tree branch as a gruesome badge of “family honour” restored.

The woman’s alleged sin was adultery, and her killer was either her own brother or husband, security sources told Reuters. Both are behind bars while an investigation continues.

Her murder brought to 27 the number of women slain in similar circumstances in Palestinian-run areas this year, according to rights groups – more than twice last year’s victims.

The rise has led Palestinians to question hidebound laws they say are lax on killers, as well as a reluctance to name and shame in the media and society, which may contribute to a feeling of impunity among perpetrators.

“It feels like something that belongs to another time,” said one young man in Aqqaba who refused to give his name, the first hints of a beard on his chin. “But, it’s standard.”

“Honour killing” is a social menace that occurs throughout the Middle East, though precise figures are often elusive. In neighbouring Jordan, for example, a Cambridge University survey of attitudes among young people published in June found that a third of respondents agreed with the practice. The researchers attributed the result to low levels of education and “patriarchal and traditional world views, emphasis placed on female virtue and a more general belief that violence against others is morally justified.”

The study estimated an average of 15 to 20 such killings occur every year in Jordan, with a population of around 6.3 million, compared to around 4 million in Palestinian lands….

But Soraida Hussein, whose rights group Muntada tallied this year’s killings, said the practice also has deep roots. “There is no balance in power relations between the genders. There is a patriarchal mentality…as always, the force and pressure in society is transferred from the strong to the weak,” she said….

The passing of stricter laws on violence against women is hamstrung by the absence of a Palestinian parliament, which has not met since President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party and the Islamist Hamas group fought a brief, bloody civil war in 2007.

Abbas has used his executive power to amend or cancel parts of the penal law, but has not yet changed all legislation which applies a separate status to domestic violence and has been used to justify killings and lighten prison sentences.

Palestinian Minister of Women’s Affairs Rabiha Diab saved much of her blame for violence toward women for Israel: “The Israeli occupation is the one practising the utmost violence … it’s the main thing keeping us from advancing….

Israel voted full member of CERN, first non-European country to be admitted

20-state council of the Center of European Nuclear Research unanimously voted to accept Israel.

CERN particle research center

The Jerusalem Post (Dec 12) — The 20-state council of CERN, the Center of European Nuclear Research that operates the Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss- French border, voted unanimously on Thursday night to accept Israel as a full member.

CERN is the largest center in the world for the study of atomic particles and is run with an annual budget of 1.246.5 billion Swiss francs (more than NIS 4.9b.). Since October 12, 2011, Israel was an associate member in the pre-stage to membership of CERN, membership that needed to be held for a minimum of 24 months.

Science, Technology and Space Minister Yaakov Peri said that “scientific interests overcame political ones. Israel is now the first and only country outside Europe to be granted full member status. Beyond the prestige of membership, it will make it possible for Israeli industry to participated in tenders connected with the collider, be represented in the organization’s management, apply for Israeli student scholarships and, of course, integrate Israeli scientists in research groups at the collider.”

The ministry has been behind the effort for full status in the important scientific organization and will be responsible for paying annual fees for membership.

At present, some 40 Israeli scientists divide their time between Israel and CERN in Switzerland. They include Prof. Prof. Giora Mikenberg and Prof, Eilam Gross of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Prof. Eliezer Rabinovici from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Prof. Shulamit Levenberg of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa.

There are also 22 doctoral students and 22 post-doctoral students from Israel active at CERN.

“This is a real scientific and diplomatic accomplishment that joins a series of similar achievements in recent years,” Peri said.

“Israeli science continues to prove that it has the power to bridge the political disagreements we have with Europe. Israeli membership in the organization will make it possible for our scientists to have access to some of the most advanced infrastructures in the world.”

Rabinovici, who represents Israel in the council, said CERN’s decision was “a welcome recognition of Israeli science and technology. Joining as an member with equal rights results from excellent cooperation among many academic and government factors. The fact that we achieved this warms the heart.”

Five minutes of the most hilarious ‘workers fail’ clips of 2013

Everyone has a bad day at work every once in a while. Somehow watching footage of these “work fails” is actually humorous, or at least jaw-dropping.

What’s better than a good “worker fail” video? How about more than five minutes’ worth of clips making up the “ultimate workers fail compilation 2013.”

It’s full of runaway trucks, destruction, unfortunate injuries, stupidity, screaming and basically a lot of situations that will have you asking (as one person in the video did) “are you out of your mind?” Or, to put it another way, think a lot of Steve Urkel “Did I do that?” moments.
