Israeli wins European women’s science competition

Dr. Osnat Zomer-Penn, researching genetic origins of autism, is the third Israeli in a row to win the L’Oréal -UNESCO prize.

israeliwomanFor the third year running, the Israeli winner of the L’Oréal-UNESCO “Women in Science” prize has gone on to take the winning title for all of Europe. Dr. Osnat Zomer-Penn, who was one of three Israelis chosen to compete in the finals, received the European award in a ceremony at the Sorbonne in Paris on Thursday.

Zomer-Penn, who is doing research at Tel Aviv University and at the University of Seattle in Washington state, was named Europe’s top Woman in Science by L’Oréal and UNESCO for her work in determining the genetic basis of autism. Zomer-Penn had been chosen as one of the Israeli winners of the L’Oréal-UNESCO prize last August. Zomer-Penn was one of 15 women selected from around the world in regional competition finals, each of whom receives $40,000 to advance her studies – along with the international recognition that winning the competition brings.

…The L’Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Prize has been awarded for 15 years, with Israel joining in 2008. Since then, Israel, although one of the smallest countries participating in the event, has become one of its biggest winners, with three Israelis — Zomer-Penn, Hadar Gelber-Sagiv, and Na’ama Geva Zatursky — winning the European award over the past three years. Dr. Ada Yonath, who went on to win a Nobel Prize, won the award in 2008, and Israeli Victoria Yavlasky won in 2005.

In a letter to Zomer-Penn, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu wrote that she had “joined an exclusive club of Israeli scholars at the forefront of global research and science. You and your colleagues, along with many other researchers, are living proof of the quality of Israeli researchers and their contribution to the advancement of science and research.”

Bank of Cyprus big savers to lose up to 60%

ap-greece-cyprus-financial-crisis-4_3_r536_c534NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — A Central Bank official and a senior Finance Ministry technocrat says that Bank of Cyprus savers with over 100,000 euros could take losses of up to 60%.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they’re not authorized to publicly discuss details of the issue, said Saturday that deposits over 100,000 at the country’s largest lender will lose 37.5% of their value after being converted into bank shares.

They said they could lose up to 22.5% more, depending on an assessment by officials who will determine the exact figure aimed at restoring the troubled bank back to health.

Cyprus agreed Monday to make depositors contribute to a financial rescue in order to secure $12.9 billion in loans from the eurozone and the IMF.

Greek neo-Nazi party: Boycott Estee Lauder

By the Jerusalem Post: Athens, Greece – The Greek Golden Dawn party called for a boycott of Estee Lauder cosmetic products after World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder urged Greece to ban the neo-Nazi group.

Due to the “hostile attack on Greek sovereignty, freedom, and interests, Lauder’s cosmetics monopoly Estee Lauder must be boycotted,” said a statement on the website of Golden Dawn’s New York branch.

Lauder, speaking at a ceremony on March 17 to commemorate the destruction of the historic Jewish community in Thessaloniki by the Nazis, called on Greece to take a tougher stance against Golden Dawn.

Golden Dawn erupted onto the political scene last year, winning 7 percent of the vote, or 18 seats, in the 300-member Parliament. Recent polls have indicated the party, which runs on a fierce anti-immigrant platform, now has between 14 to 18 percent of the population’s support.

Jewish and international groups have condemned Golden Dawn as being racist and anti-Semitic.

Golden Dawn slammed Lauder for interfering in Greek politics.

“An institution that is not Greek and does nothing to contribute to Greek well-being is demanding [Greek Prime Minister Antonis] Samaras ban the third largest party, which enjoys up to 18 percent of the electorate’s support, all in the name of liberal democracy nonetheless,” the statement said.

“The World Jewish Congress claims to speak on behalf of Greece’s 5,000 Jews. Why does Samaras care more about the opinions of 5,000 over 1 million Greeks, if Greece is truly a democracy?” said the statement.

Gilad Schalit’s capture: In his own words

By the Jerusalem Post: Former soldier gives military investigators an account of the attack that led to his capture and the deaths of two of his comrades.

In conversations with a psychologist after his return to Israel from five years in captivity, Gilad Schalit expressed fears over the IDF investigation he would undergo. Schalit knew exactly what he was worried about – he knew all too well the circumstances that led to his captivity. He knew that there was no military glory in what had happened there, on that night. He knew that he did not do his duty as an IDF combat soldier and did not even do the minimum to prevent his own capture.

Click here for original article in Hebrew

Schalit knew that he had effectively given himself up on June 25, 2006, been taken captive without firing even one bullet, despite the fact that he could have prevented the entire situation with relative ease. He was very concerned indeed over his meeting with the military investigators.

But in contrast to other cases of soldiers being taken prisoner or abducted, the IDF was handling Schalit with kid gloves.

The soldier had become “the child of us all,” whose years of absence were etched on the national consciousness – and it was a sentiment that had infected the IDF as well.

…Three more attacked an empty IDF armored personnel carrier some distance away, and the other two hit the tank. If the tank crew had remained inside the tank, it would have been easy to take out their attackers.

Even Schalit, alone as he was, should have been able to manage it. At this point Schalit was sitting in the gunner’s seat, praying for it to just be over. Then one of militants approached and threw two or three grenades into the turret. Schalit doesn’t recall the explosion of the grenades, but he does remember the smoke very well.

His bullet-proof vest and his flak jacket, hanging on the back of the chair, absorbed most of the impact. The chair was completely shredded.

Schalit, miraculously, was lightly wounded with shrapnel in his elbow and rear. He was scared, shocked. He stayed in the tank for a minute or two until the smoke spread throughout the turret and he found it hard to breathe. Then he decided, finally, to leave. He left unarmed. His gun, a deadly M-16, he left on the floor of the turret. In military terms, this is called abandoning your weapon.

If only Schalit had taken his gun with him when he left the tank; if only he had seen the militant approach the tank and start to climb up it. He could have taken him out easily, but he was not in battle mode. This is what Schalit himself told the investigators. Schalit’s tank did not fire a single bullet.

Arab Leaders Create $1 Billion Fund for ‘Islamic’ Jerusalem

Newsmax: Doha, Qatar — The Arab League Tuesday approved a Qatari proposal to set up a $1 billion fund for Arab east Jerusalem, which Palestinians want as the capital of an independent state under any peace deal with Israel.

Arabs say that Israeli settlement-building on land captured in the 1967 Middle East war, including Arab east Jerusalem, has made a two-state solution backed by the United States unfeasible.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the fund to help protect the Arab character of the city and urged Arab states to contribute to it.

“The Israeli occupation is working in a systematic and hurried way to Judaize east Jerusalem, change its features and uproot its Palestinian inhabitants, attacking the al-Aqsa Mosque and its Muslim and Christian holy sites,” Abbas said in a speech at the summit.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said the initiative was “a badge of shame” for Qatar.

“Objecting to ‘Judaization of Jerusalem,’ so to speak, is absurd and is equatable to an objection to the Catholic nature of the Vatican or the Islamization of Mecca, it is naturally unthinkable,” Palmor said.

The fate of Jerusalem has proved one of the thorniest sticking points in past Middle East peace negotiations.

Citing Jewish biblical ties to the holy city, Israel annexed the Arab eastern half and its surroundings in 1980 in a move rejected by the U.N. Security Council.

(CNSNews.com) – On Feb. 12, about two years after the U.S. government first militarily intervened in Libya to advance the cause of Libyan revolutionaries and five months after Libyan terrorists murdered Amb. Chris Stevens and three other Americans in that country, the post-revolutionary Libyan government arrested a U.S. citizen for allegedly “proselytizing” Christianity in Benghazi.

As of today, according to both a senior administration official and a State Department spokesperson, this U.S. citizen remains imprisoned in post-Qaddafi Libya.

The Libyan government also arrested seven other Christians in Benghazi in connection with the same alleged case of Christian proselytizing. These include a South African woman, a South Korean man and five Egyptian men.

One of the Egyptians, Ezzat Atallah, was tortured by the Libyans while in detention, according to an Egyptian human rights lawyer. Atallah later died in Libyan custody—from what an Egyptian official characterized as natural causes.

Atallah’s death and Libya’s detention of other Christian Egyptians sparked outrage in Egypt’s Christian community and a demonstration at the Libyan embassy in Cairo.

However, Libya’s arrest and detention of an American Christian has thus far gone largely unnoted in the United States.

Seventy years after most of Polish Jewry died in the Holocaust, it seems that Jewish life in Poland is experiencing a revival.

Jews and non-Jews attend Seder at Jewish Community Center.

krakowpassoverKRAKOW – Seventy years after most of Polish Jewry died in the Holocaust, it seems that Jewish life in Poland is experiencing a revival.

More than 150 people gathered at the Jewish Community Center in Krakow on Monday evening to celebrate the Passover Seder. Among them were non-Jews, mostly Catholic Poles, with a great interest in Judaism. For many of them, it was the first Jewish holiday they had ever celebrated.

Leading the Seder was David Pash, son of the city’s Chief Rabbi Boaz Pash.

Guests sat around tables laden with traditional Passover dishes and kosher Israeli wine and matza, and listened to the Haggada in Hebrew and Polish.

Jonathan Ornstein, head of the Krakow JCC, told The Jerusalem Post about the preparations for the Passover evening and said that even he was surprised by the number of requests they had received to attend the celebration.

“We had a lot of interest, and we had more than 150 guests, including locals and people from all over the world, including Israel, the United States and Canada who are visiting Krakow and asked to join us,” he said.

“We had people of all ages, from a six-week-old baby to a 90-year-old guest.”

He added that “our main mission is, of course, to build Jewish life here in Krakow, but we are always happy when visitors can join us and see the wonderful rebirth of Jewish life in Krakow.”

50% Belgian Muslim teens have anti-Semitic views

By JTA: Major survey among Belgian teens finds anti-Semitism is 7 times more prevalent among Muslim youths than non-Muslims.

swastikaANTWERP, Belgium — A major survey among Belgian teenagers indicated anti-Semitism was seven times more prevalent among Muslim youths than in non-Muslim teenagers.

Conducted in recent months by three universities for the Flemish government, the survey was published last month based on questionnaires filled out by 3,867 high school students in Antwerp and Ghent, including 1,068 Muslims.

Among Muslims, 50.9 percent of respondents agreed with the statement “Jews foment war and blame others for it” compared to only 7.1 percent among non-Muslims. Among Muslims, 24.5 percent said they partially agreed with the statement, as did 20.6 percent of non-Muslims.

The statement “Jews seek to control everything” received a 45.1 approval rating among Muslims compared to 10.8 approval among non-Muslims. Of Muslims, 27.9 percent said they partially agreed, as did 29.2 percent of non-Muslims.

About 35 percent of Muslims agreed with the statement that “Jews have too much clout in Belgium” compared to 11.8 percent of non-Muslims who participated in the “Young in Antwerp and Ghent” survey. The results were part of a 360-page report which was produced for the Flemish government’s Youth Research Platform by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven; Ghent University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

FOX hosts dumbfounded as Geraldo Rivera compares the father of modern terrorism to George Washington

By BareNakedIslam: Fox News Channel host Geraldo Rivera appeared on Fox & Friends on Friday where he struggled to defend the late Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, as well as the decision by Barack Hussein Obama to stand beneath his portrait during a joint press conference with Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.

2013-03-21T133939Z_867057079_GM1E93L1O3G01_RTRMADP_3_ISRAEL-PALESTINIANS-OBAMA1Mediaite  Rivera attempted to explain to the incredulous Fox hosts that Arafat, implicated in scores of terrorist acts, was the Palestinian equivalent of George Washington.

According to Camera Organization, groups under Arafat’s direct or indirect command – including Fatah, Black September, Tanzim and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade – were responsible for hundreds of bombings, hijackings, assassinations and other attacks, including the 1972 murder of 11 of Israel’s Olympic athletes in Munich, the 1973 murder of the American ambassador to Sudan, Cleo Noel, and the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruiseship (resulting in the murder of wheelchair-bound Leon Klinghoffer)

“Arafat is generally regarded as the George Washington of the Palestinian people,” Rivera continued. “Did George Washington steal from the American colonies?” asked a shocked Brian Kilmeade. “This guy stole billions of dollars from his own people and then died without telling anyone where he put it.”

Yassir-Arafat-alt-small-e1364084805849Rivera reminded the hosts that Arafat won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. (Yet turned down the Bill Clinton negotiated peace agreement with Israel that would have given Arafat 95% of what he wanted)

Kilmeade reminded Rivera that they all agreed that Arafat killed and stole from people and the White House still let the president stand beneath a his portrait. “There’s no doubt about it that Nobel Peace Prize should never have gone to him because Bill Clinton said the biggest mistake of his presidency was banking on him to bring peace because he was never sincere,” Kilmeade exclaimed.

“Well, you know, that may all be true,” Rivera agreed. However, he said that Arafat remains a Palestinian hero. “I think that for you to make him something that, from the point of view of an American president or the American people, I think is unfair,” Rivera added.

Pakistan: Checks to Christian victims of Islamic terror attack bounce

PakistanBy the Blaze: Some 265 checks distributed by the Pakistani government to Christian victims of an Islamist terror attack in Joseph Colony have bounced.

The checks were meant to serve as compensation for a March 9 attack in which an over 3,000-member mob set fire to more than 150 Christian homes in Joseph Colony after alleged blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad were made by Sawan Masih, a 28-year-old Christian sanitation worker.

The Express Tribune reports:

LAHORE: The cheques distributed among victims of the Joseph Colony attack by the Punjab government bounced, Express News reported Thursday. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had announced (Rupees) 5 million in compensation for each of those affected in the mob attack. However, the 265 cheques distributed by the government have bounced.

According to reports, the finance ministry had issued the amount promised. When the cheques bounced, the victims started protesting.

Islamic scholar Robert Spencer observes that it is not surprising the checks bounced, as those considered infidels are not entitled to monetary compensation by Muslims. Rather, it is the other way around. Of course Spencer is referring to the “jizya” — a poll tax Islamic leaders demand of their non-Muslim subjects.

Quoting from the Quran 9:29:

“Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.”

‘Filth’: Here’s how snubbed members of Knesset are responding to Obama’s Jerusalem speech

obama-jerusalem-speech-gettyBy The Blaze: Now that the applause has died down from President Barack Obama’s address to students in Jerusalem, Members of Knesset are coming out with their criticisms, with one lawmaker calling Obama’s speech “offensive to Netanyahu” and another saying it contained “filth.”

That’s no surprise, considering that in his speech, Obama encouraged the Israeli students to push their political leaders to “take risks” for peace. This, even though the Israeli public went to the polls only two months ago to democratically elect their leaders.

Member of Knesset Miri Regev of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud-Beiteinu party called Obama’s speech “offensive to Netanyahu.”

“I was surprised by his words about a Palestinian state, that he didn’t mention the word ‘Jerusalem’ and that he said, ‘Leaders must bring peace,’ as if Netanyahu doesn’t want peace,” she said.

Regev slammed Obama’s decision to sideline the Knesset in favor of a speech to more left-wing students. She said Obama should not have “gone over their heads.”

“I thought Obama arrived with a greater understanding of the diplomatic process between us and the Palestinians, but I see that he hasn’t changed his stances, not about settlement construction and not about two states for two nations, and decided that the young people must influence their leaders to put public pressure on the government so it will implement [Obama’s] agenda,” Regev said.

Moshe Feiglin, a hawkish Likud lawmaker, said Obama’s speech contained “a lot of filth in the middle.”

Though he praised Obama for acknowledging the connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel, he suggested Obama’s call for peace was naïve, saying this: “When Obama talked about forcing us to make peace, all I could think about was baby Adele, who was injured by stone-throwing near Ariel last week.”

Three-year-old Adele Biton is now fighting for her life after being critically injured when Palestinians threw rocks at the car carrying her, her sisters and her mother. Police say the rock throwing caused their car to swerve and slam into an oncoming truck.

Sharia in action in the mainstream media: Muslim gang-rapes across Europe underreported in press

The Qur’an allows for the owning of sex slaves:

If you fear that you will not act justly towards the orphans, marry such women as seem good to you, two, three, four; but if you fear you will not be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands own; so it is likelier you will not be partial. (Qur’an 4:3)

This verse is the basis for Islamic polygamy, allowing a man to take as many as four wives, as long as he believes he is able to “deal justly” with all of them. But justice in these circumstances is in the eye of the beholder. Ibn Kathir says this the requirement to deal justly with one’s wives is no big deal, since treating them justly isn’t the same as treating them equally: “it is not obligatory to treat them equally, rather it is recommended. So if one does so, that is good, and if not, there is no harm on him.”

The verse goes on to say that if a man cannot deal justly with multiple wives, then he should marry only one, or resort to “what your right hands own” – that is, slave girls.

Slave girls? Maulana Bulandshahri explains the wisdom of this practice, and longs for the good old days:

During Jihad (religion war), many men and women become war captives. The Amirul Mu’minin [leader of the believers, or caliph – an office now vacant] has the choice of distributing them amongst the Mujahidin [warriors of jihad], in which event they will become the property of these Mujahidin. This enslavement is the penalty for disbelief (kufr).

He goes on to explain that this is not ancient history:

None of the injunctions pertaining to slavery have been abrogated in the Shari’ah. The reason that the Muslims of today do not have slaves is because they do not engage in Jihad (religion war). Their wars are fought by the instruction of the disbelievers (kuffar) and are halted by the same felons. The Muslim [sic] have been shackled by such treaties of the disbelievers (kuffar) whereby they cannot enslave anyone in the event of a war. Muslims have been denied a great boon whereby every home could have had a slave. May Allah grant the Muslims the ability to escape the tentacles of the enemy, remain steadfast upon the Din (religion) and engage in Jihad (religion war) according to the injunctions of Shari’ah. Amen!

This is by no means an eccentric or unorthodox view in Islam. The Egyptian Sheikh Abu-Ishaq al-Huwayni declared in May 2011 that “we are in the era of jihad,” and that as they waged jihad warfare against infidels, Muslims would take slaves. He clarified what he meant in a subsequent interview:

…Jihad is only between Muslims and infidels….Spoils, slaves, and prisoners are only to be taken in war between Muslims and infidels. Muslims in the past conquered, invaded, and took over countries. This is agreed to by all scholars–there is no disagreement on this from any of them, from the smallest to the largest, on the issue of taking spoils and prisoners. The prisoners and spoils are distributed among the fighters, which includes men, women, children, wealth, and so on.

When a slave market is erected, which is a market in which are sold slaves and sex-slaves, which are called in the Qur’an by the name milk al-yamin, “that which your right hands possess” [Qur’an 4:24]. This is a verse from the Qur’an which is still in force, and has not been abrogated. The milk al-yamin are the sex-slaves. You go to the market, look at the sex-slave, and buy her. She becomes like your wife, (but) she doesn’t need a (marriage) contract or a divorce like a free woman, nor does she need a wali. All scholars agree on this point–there is no disagreement from any of them. […] When I want a sex slave, I just go to the market and choose the woman I like and purchase her.

Right around the same time, on May 25, 2011, a female Kuwaiti activist and politician, Salwa al-Mutairi, also spoke out in favor of the Islamic practice of sexual slavery of non-Muslim women, emphasizing that the practice accorded with Islamic law and the parameters of Islamic morality.

…A merchant told me that he would like to have a sex slave. He said he would not be negligent with her, and that Islam permitted this sort of thing. He was speaking the truth….I brought up (this man’s) situation to the muftis in Mecca. I told them that I had a question, since they were men who specialized in what was halal, and what was good, and who loved women. I said, “What is the law of sex slaves?”The mufti said, “With the law of sex slaves, there must be a Muslim nation at war with a Christian nation, or a nation which is not of the religion, not of the religion of Islam. And there must be prisoners of war.”

“Is this forbidden by Islam?,” I asked.

“Absolutely not. Sex slaves are not forbidden by Islam. On the contrary, sex slaves are under a different law than the free woman. The free woman must be completely covered except for her face and hands. But the sex slave can be naked from the waist up. She differs a lot from the free woman. While the free woman requires a marriage contract, the sex slave does not–she only needs to be purchased by her husband, and that’s it. Therefore the sex slave is different than the free woman.”

While the savage exploitation of girls and young women is an unfortunately cross-cultural phenomenon, only in Islamic law does it carry anything approaching divine sanction. Here is yet another human rights scandal occasioned by Islamic law that the international human rights community and the mainstream media cravenly ignore.

“Muslim gang-rapes across Europe under-reported in press,” by Katerina Nikolas for the Digital Journal, March 23:

High profile-gang rapes in India have been in the headlines since December. The phenomenon is growing across Europe too, but tends to be under reported due to the high incidence of Muslim perpetrators which makes it politically incorrect to mention.

Obama: Israelis have true peace partner in Abbas. Abbas: We have the same policies as Hamas. Hamas: Killing Jews is worship that draws us close to Allah.

“Of course, Israel cannot be expected to negotiate with anyone who is dedicated to its destruction. But while I know you have had differences with the Palestinian Authority, I believe that you do have a true partner in President Abbas…” —Barack Obama, March 21, 2013

“As far as I am concerned, there is no difference between our policies and those of Hamas.” — Mahmoud Abbas, March 15, 2013

“Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it” — Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna, as quoted in the Hamas Charter

“Killing Jews is worship that draws us close to Allah” — Hamas’s Al Aqsa TV

More on this story. “PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas: EU Can Remove Hamas from Terror List, No Difference between Our Policies and Theirs,” from MEMRI, March 15:

Following are excerpts from an interview with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, which aired on Russia Today TV on March 15, 2013.Interviewer: It is said that the EU plans to remove Hamas from the list of terror organizations. Do you view this as a step toward complete recognition of the legitimacy of the [Hamas] government?

Mahmoud Abbas: I do not think that they will acknowledge the legitimacy of the Hamas government. After what happened, and given that Hamas has honored the truce, and has declared that it supports peaceful popular resistance… As far as I am concerned, there is no difference between our policies and those of Hamas. So why are they labeled as terrorists? In my opinion, [the EU] can remove Hamas [from the list], why not?

Interviewer: But you do not fire missiles at Israel.

Mahmoud Abbas: Neither we nor Hamas fire missiles. Since the end of the second Intifada, we have committed ourselves to refrain from using weapons. We say this out in the open. It’s no secret. We don’t hide this under the table. We say loud and clear that we have no intention or desire to violate… or rather, to engage in an armed Intifada with Israel. I say this loud and clear.

Hamas declared [the same], but then there were skirmishes once or twice. Hopefully, that was the end of it.

Partners for peace: Hamas women officers shoot at photos of Israeli leaders during graduation ceremony

And Obama has the audacity to lecture the Israelis about making peace. “Hamas Women Officers Shoot at Photos of Israeli Leaders during Graduation Ceremony,” from MEMRI, March 19:

Following are excerpts from footage of a Hamas officers’ graduation ceremony, in which female snipers exhibited their skills by shooting at photos of Israeli leaders. The ceremony aired on Al-Aqsa TV on March 19, 2013.

Announcer: Now, brothers and sisters, we shall watch a shooting performance by sisters. The men are not the only ones in the battlefield. The sisters, the Muslim women, participate alongside the men in defending the soil of Palestine and our holy places.

Hamas PM Ismail Haniyeh is seen sitting next to Salafi Egyptian cleric Safwat Higazi, watching the show.

Israel surrenders under pressure from Obama, apologizes for defending itself against jihad flotilla, will pay victims’ families

YouTube Preview Image

By Robert Spencer, founder of JihadWatch.org: This is a dark day for Israel. The people on the Mavi Marmara flotilla were genocidal Jew-hating jihadis, as you can see in the video above: they were chanting a jihad war cry recalling Muhammad’s massacre of the Jews of Arabia: “Khybar, Khybar, O Jews, the army of Muhammad will return.” See the photos here of their weapons. In rapidly re-Islamizing Turkey, the fact that Israel fought back against these jihadis is a serious offense. And now Israel, under pressure from Obama, has apologized for defending itself, and set a precedent that it can be pressured into making self-defeating concessions after doing so.

“Turkey, Israel make US-brokered peace after Mavi Marmara apology,” from Today’s Zaman, March 22:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered an apology to Turkey for a 2010 raid on an aid flotilla that resulted in the deaths of eight Turks and a Turkish American, ending a deep crisis in ties between the two former allies.

In a statement carried by Reuters, Netanyahu said he “expressed apology” to the Turkish people for any error that could have led to loss of life in the flotilla incident. He also said Israel has agreed to pay compensation to the families of the victims and that Israel and Turkey agree to work together to improve the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories.

A Turkish official in Ankara confirmed the apology, telling Today’s Zaman that Netanyahu called Erdoğan to offer an apology and that Erdoğan accepted it.

The breakthrough came as a result of what appears to be a US bid to normalize relations between the two former allies. News of the apology came just after President Barack Obama said that Erdoğan and Netanyahu spoke on the phone on Friday. The announcement came hours after Obama wrapped up a visit to Israel.

“I am hopeful that today’s exchange between the two leaders will enable them to engage in deeper cooperation on this and a range of other challenges and opportunities,” Obama said in the statement released by the White House. “The United States deeply values our close partnerships with both Turkey and Israel, and we attach great importance to the restoration of positive relations between them in order to advance regional peace and security.”

Netanyahu promised Erdoğan that he will lift restrictions to goods civilian people will use in Palestinian territories, including Gaza, and this will continue until peace holds.

Muslims hate Obama more than Bush

USA Today: U.S is now less popular in the region than at the end of the George W. Bush administration.

ap_mideast_palestinians_obama_54847039-4_3_r536_c534

President Obama’s first journey to Israel as president comes amid earth-shattering change in Middle East, much of it for the worse. The Arab Spring, which once raised hopes of freedom and dignity, has diverged onto the dark path of Islamist authoritarian rule. In Syria, tens of thousands of people have died in a bitter civil war that might have recently seen its first use of chemical weapons. And Iran continues its march toward nuclear weapons capability, heedless of international condemnation. Obama’s effort to seek peace between Palestinians and Israelis is in tatters.

That’s why the White House has been lowering expectations for Obama’s trip to Israel all this week. He will announce no new peace plan, grand design or major foreign policy initiative. His advisers are calling the trip a “listening tour.” That is what you call a state visit when you have little to say.

Failed beginning

Despite downgrading the trip, many see Obama’s arrival as the sequel to his 2009 visit to Cairo, where he announced a “new beginning” with the Muslim world. Four years later, that doesn’t auger well for renewed efforts in Israel and the West Bank. According to the latest survey by the Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project, confidence in Obama in Muslim countries dropped from 33% to 24% in his first term. Approval of Obama’s policies declined even further, from 34% to 15%. And support for the United States in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Pakistan is lower today than it was in 2008 in the closing year of George W. Bush’s administration. That collapse of support has not happened elsewhere.

In his Cairo speech, Obama pledged a relationship between America and Muslims around the world “based on mutual interest and mutual respect.” But in 2013, interests are diverging, and respect is in short supply.
